It was a warm morning in Kenora when we left (+5), and the nice weather followed us into Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The topography stayed behind, though! It's fantastically flat here, and the white snow and blue sky go on as far as we can see. Xavier Rudd, Sublime, Beastie Boys, Barenaked Ladies and the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack are keeping us alert, and we're feeling inspired to make it a long-haul day.
The TransCanada took us through Winnie-peg (as Colin likes to call it), and we had a nice drive along the avenues lined with oak and elm trees. Gasoline is 113.9/L here, which now seems low!
Past Winniepeg, there are signs encouraging drivers to 'Yellowhead It to Saskatoon- The New TransCanada Highway', so we motored along Hwy 16, the Yellowhead. The great Rogers coverage on the BlackBerry let us google the meaning of the name- it is the namesake of a fur trader and explorer named Pierre Bostonais. He had yellow streaks in his hair, and was nicknamed "TĂȘte Jaune" (Yellowhead). After lunch, we made a long-distance call to Dawson, Yukon, and bought weekend passes to the music festival. We also went on Hotwire and got a deal on a hotel in Saskatoon (after texting Steve for advice), and downloaded the newest google maps program and got directions to the hotel. All this while driving through the emptiest place I have ever seen! Communications technology is pretty cooool.
The screen time didn't take away from our enjoyment of the scenery on the drive today. We both were in awe of the huge sky in Saskatchewan, and want to come back for a visit when the fields are gold instead of white.
We've just arrived at the hotel (a fancy one- the beds have remotes!), and were welcomed with a nice little present from Saskatchewan- it's an hour earlier here! It's only 7pm (9pm in Toronto), so we are headed out to the streets of Saskatoon to explore, after trying some Manitoba beers bought in Russell (Fort Garry Dark Ale).

Fantastic photos. Hugs from all of us. I'll be posting new pictures on FB today of Connor's b-day and the drumming yesterday.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning,
ReplyDeleteTechnology is truly fantastic. Not only did you access so much information in a speeding car, in the middle of nowhere, but you then pass it on to us in seconds, including photographs. Fantastic.
Mum and I stopped at the Union Station in Winnipeg on our train trip. We derailed for a few hours as this was were the crew changed and re provisioned.
1004 km in how many hours (including stops) I’m curious as to your average kph.
OMG
later
