We just got home from a trip down to Mt Lorne, to take a look at a place for rent. It is as wonderful as a small home in the forest in Yukon sounds, and we will hopefully have a great chat with the landlord tomorrow and convince her that we are ideal tenants. Lauren is trying her hardest to rein in her excitement before there are any concrete arrangements, but it's impossible not to imagine camping outside in the backyard, and filling the three raised beds with vegetables. And putting a dog in the dog pen! And getting a comfy pull-out couch for visitors! And caribou-watching! We'll keep you posted :)
Colin has started work on an organic farm just north of Whitehorse, off the Klondike Hwy. It might be a short-term opportunity, a chance to learn a few things about agriculture in this region. If things work out with the place in Mt Lorne, the drive to the farm might be unsustainable in terms of gas and time. While we're here in town, though, it gives Colin the chance to work with the earth and get dirty.
Last weekend was one of the quieter ones we've had recently, but included exploring a new bar for Friday-afternoon beers called the High Country Inn (we had bison fries for appetizers!), an incredible Korean dinner, and another community movie night at the Alpine Bakery, this time featuring a film about a small town in northern Manitoba called Wabowden, where a class at the elementary school has revived the tradition of vegetable gardening. Saturday night was Thai food and community coffee house at the Mt Lorne community centre, where we were entertained by 4 groups of musicians throughout the evening. There was one group of highschool-aged guys who played the drums, stand-up bass, guitar and violin, and were really talented. We got home and realized that there was a full moon that night, and went out for a walk in the forest late into the night. We heard an owl hooting, but not too much else. Sunday was movie day- we got tickets to see the encore presentations of 2 films from the local festival called Available Light. The first one was called Circo, and was about a Mexican family's circus and their struggles to keep it in business. Then we went back to the Arts Centre for the movie version of Mordecai Richer's book Barney's Version, which was pretty great.
We're celebrating Easter in the Kluane National Park this year! Hopefully there is no more snow this week... :)
Goodnight,
Lauren and Colin
Wishing you luck with the home in the forest. Happy Egg Hunting...please watch out for the bunny droppings. Thanks for keeping us all updated. How's the job going Lauren? It's cold in TO and not like spring at all so expect summer will hit all of a sudden with a blast or not! Back to doing easter egg cookies and cooking. Lauren and JP will be here tonight.
