Friends and family, there is nothing like the midnight sun. The light at this time of year, in this place, is something special. We are looking forward to sharing it with lots of you. It really makes you appreciate where you are on the planet, and life in general.
This weekend in Yukon is the cool international bike relay race from Haines Junction, Yukon, to Haines, Alaska (238 km). They accept teams of up to 8 riders, and people from all over the world ride bikes down Haines Highway (Hwy 3) , beside a breath-taking mountain range. We would have given you notice if this was something we were getting involved in, but lots of Yukoners that we talk to are going over there for the weekend. There seem to be more people around than usual, so the tourism season is likely underway. Some of the stores are open late, including Mac's Fireweed Books, open until 12pm.
A new skilll has developed exponentially here, the mosquito-clap-and-kill move. Somehow, some bugs find there way into where you are here, and consider themselves lucky to have sole access to your blood. And stalking them and ending their lives in a loud clap is fun to practice! It's so fulfilling to find a squished one on your hand, especially when it's the 6th one in a row. We've heard that this is the worst amount of bugs in a while, though, so it seems like it will be a manageable part of living here. The screened tent is working out very well, and is a nice place to hang out in the evenings. We picked up some old deck chairs from the Free Store last weekend, and spray painted them bright red. And Colin bought a rug for the deck from radio show segment called 'Trader Time", where people call in to sell or give away their things.
Oh! We helped a friend move a greenhouse across his property this week. It was filmed for posterity (Dan films everything, Cheryl told us), and we will send along the YouTube link when it's posted. It was a good time on a Tuesday evening, and the sunlight into the evening made it feel like time was going by so slowly. Dan and Cheryl made a great bbq dinner and we had a fun night. Then, on the way home at 10pm, we went into a Yukon artisans shop, and I bought a pair of cool purple molded flower stud earrings. :)
Tonight, Friday evening, we celebrated by enjoying a growler-sized amount of Double Trouble, Yukon Brewing's Double IPA. Yum yum yum, is this ever nice beer. We shared a tasty meal with Deb, our friend the musher here in Mt Lorne. She taught us about taking care of dogs, and we are going by her place this weekend to meet a couple of her dogs that might be able to move in with us. Wooo hoooooo!
Happy Friday,
Love Lauren and Colin
