Mid-week news

We are enjoying some fantastic weather here lately- sunny and warm (although a bit windy). There is a rumour going around that summer might be early this year, but people are quick to remind each other that it has snowed here in mid-June, so we're just enjoying the sun a day at a time.

Whitehorsians just decided yesterday that we would rather keep the old city logo over adopting a new design, which is just fine with me:

Last night was the AGM of the Mt Lorne Community Association, and Colin and I went to learn more about our future neighbourhood. Boy, are those people ever friendly! They all noticed that we were newbies right away, and came over and introduced themselves. Some of them even knew we were renting the place in Robinson even before we told them! There was an interesting presentation on Transition Towns after the AGM, and the crowd seemed interested in working on some projects to increase the community's resilience in the face of climate change and peak oil. I think I will volunteer on the board and get involved in organizing a community carpool into Whitehorse, and help out with their local Free Store (a.k.a. the place at the dump where people leave things that other people might want to use). It feels like one person's efforts could make a real contribution to a small community, and I think this is my chance to get involved in some different kinds of things.

Colin is off at the first Fireweed Farmer's Market of the season, and I'm going ride my bike over to Shipyard's Park and join him in a little while, when the laundry is done. The new residence has a big laundry room full of washers and dryers, so it's a quick job here! We have a few things to do to get ready for our trip to Skagway, Alaska, tomorrow, and then we're leaving bright and early on Saturday morning to catch the 12.45 White Pass train. We're going to be camping in Skagway with some work friends, and checking out the hiking trails along the seashore. Apparently Skagway has a great Thai restaurant, and a pub called the Red Onion that has been open since the Gold Rush, and has not seen much re-decoration over the years. And it's haunted!

Bye for now,
Lauren
