Move-in day!

We're noticing a trend in this adventure- things get better and more exciting and more beautiful the farther north we go! We discussed this with a long-haul trucker in the breakfast place in town this morning, and he confirmed it. Although he did call Dawson City (the gold-rush town 6 hours north of Whitehorse) the 'a**hole of the territory', but then explained that it was because it was the end of the 2-lane highway, and there was nothing after it. Anatomically correct, at least! More of his insights will come later :)

The Watson Lake librarian was kind enough to let us use their internet, since the Belvedere Hotel's connection has died again. This library is amazing, and even has a Toybrary! We got the good news today that our apartment in the hospital's residence is available for us to mvoe into, so after a snowshoe walk around the Signpost Forest, we're heading to Whitehorse, and will sleep in our own bed (sort of) tonight.

My skin feels like it's buzzing and my brain can't get enough of looking around- my usual signs of extreme, profound excitement! Being in Yukon and exploring a new place already seems like it will exceed my daydreams of how much fun this could be.

Here are the photos from the day (click here). Lots of wildlife including a tonne of Bison/buffalo. Our trucker friend was telling us there is a difference. Buffalo have the hump and the bison are a large cow type creature. This afternoon (march 31st) I read that it is the other way around, bison are the older species and buffalo are the domesticated species. We saw bison. They have short pointy horns and a hump. Buffalo horns are the kind that are hanging in my childhood bedroom back at Mom and Dad's O'Neill in Toronto. There are also shots of beautiful mountains (they just kept coming), a very special hot springs that are 15 minutes off the highway and more. ~ Colin

Two roads diverged in a wood and you, Lauren + Colin - took the one less traveled. So glad you dared to push your limits. The vistas, the flora + fauna, especially up the Yellowhead + Alaska Hwys were, for us, truly 'new territory'. Thanks for taking us along for the ride! Congratulations on your safe arrival. Good luck in the days to come. Now maybe I'll get some work done...
