Saturday morning hello

Colin is cooking up one of his delicious sweet potato and local egg fry-up for breakfast this morning, and since the dogs are wet from the rain last night and I'm still in my pajamas, I thought I'd stay indoors and write a little hello message. I'll take a few peeks out the window once in a while to see what cute things the dogs are up to, though :)

We are starting to daydream about our next visitors and the fun times that we can have- LK and JP will be here in 22 days, and Justin and Lilian will be here in 51! Jess Sellers will also be here in September. There are already a few plans in place for when LK and JP are here- we're going on the mother of all road trips up the Dempster Hwy to Inuvik, NWT:

We also thought of a few things that they enjoy doing that should be incorporated into their visit: (1) Beers, (2) Hikes, (3) Good meals. Any other suggestions from people who have travelled with LK and JP are welcome!

The weather around Whitehorse this week has been pretty cloudy and rainy, but tomorrow is supposed to be clear and sunny. We have been wanting to go for a hike with a great view of the mountains around Carcross, our neighbouring town to the south, and so tomorrow we're planning on hiking up Caribou Mountain with the dogs. Actually, from this photo I just found, it looks like a nice view even on a cloudy day.

Some sad news I received this week was thankfully balanced with a happy event later that day. Ever since coming here, I believed that there were two long weekends in August in Yukon- the regular old August 1st long weekend that I knew and loved from Ontario, and a new one in the middle of August, Discovery Day. A coworker burst my bubble on Thursday, when I asked her what great things she was going to do with her Monday off- we don't celebrate August 1st here! Sighhh. But at the Fireweed Market that afternoon, Colin was gifted a beauty of an Arctic Char from a local farmer, and we feasted on it last night. It's a delicious fish, and gets BBQ'ed with no seasoning, just by putting the fillets on the grill skin-side down, and cooking for 10 minutes.

Happy long weekend :)
Love Lauren and Colin
