Happy August 1st and Simcoe Day for our Toronto Friends and Family

Today marks the start of our fifth month in the Yukon, and 6 months since we left Ontario - it is hard to believe that it has already been this long. Looking back through the blog postings and through all the photos that haven't made it onto the website, it has been an adventure of a lifetime - but in many ways it has only begun.

So at the beginning of the last month in a typical summer, we have been asking locals what to expect in August. An often heard answer is, it can snow any month in the Yukon (we guess that includes August); we are told that it can be hit or miss for good weather, but we are headed into fall now. The days are still long enough that we don't get to see stars (because it doesn't get dark enough), but maybe soon if we stay up late enough we will get to wish upon the first star of about 4 months - looking forward to that moment for sure.

We are told also that the lakes that are warm enough to swim in now are going to get cold quick, and that the leaves will start to change colour in the next few weeks. As Lauren mentioned in the last posting, we are really looking forward to the rest of our visitors. Jess, Justin and Lilian will be here in the end of fall start of winter (September) but Lauren and JP will be here in fall. Over and over again we have been told that the fall colours in northern Yukon along the Dempster Highways is spectacular, with any luck we will get to take photos like this one.

Often when are meeting people here, they are happy to hear we are so new and ask 'how long are you going to stay here'- we have no problems remembering our promises to our Moms that we would be back after 2 years - just how much after 2 years we don't know yet. We are thinking that this might be a great place for one's parents to retire and live in a beautiful cabin overlooking the quiet peaceful mountains - time will tell if there is any interest in such an adventure (Mom, the library here is great and there are quilting clubs - just saying).

For more recent news, we did get to go for a hike up Caribou Mountain yesterday. It was a very vertical climb, we had the aid of excited dogs on the way up who were all too pleased to pull us up. They went through more then half the water that we brought which had me thinking, crap, we are going to have to carry a lot of water when we go camping with the pooches (when that day comes) although they like puddle water just as much as well water. Here is a little video from about 3/4 that way up Caribou Mountain (sorry for all the wind in the microphone)

Dogs are fine in the car, they stay back there with no issues

Mountain tops we did not hike

We could hear the waterfall from so far away

The mountain sides were covered in sheep trails- the dogs would have loved to been off the leash

We have a relatively normal week ahead of us. I have a few market things to do including making a new sign (since the dogs destroyed the old one) and I have to get some workshop info into the newspaper. This weekend we are volunteering for the South Lakes Loppet which is a bike race starting and finishing in our hood. We are hoping to get a canoe trip put together for next weekend and then the week after that our Ottawa visitors arrive! On the evening of the 25th after the market we leave for the arctic.

One last thing for your viewing pleasure, up to now we have been bikejoring the dogs one per bike, well Lauren took it to a new level, I'll leave you with the video of them leaving our place.
