First thing Saturday

The coffee's ready, the dogs are fed, CBC radio is on; the weekend has started in all the usual ways, except... there's no sign of the sun! Here is what today will look like, in our part of the country and yours:

Date: October 29
Sunrise: 9:18am (Whitehorse), 7:49am (Toronto), 7:15am (Nassau)
Sunset: 6:10pm (Whitehorse), 6:13pm (Toronto), 6:31pm (Nassau)
Length of day: 8h 52m (Whitehorse), 10h 23m (Toronto), 11h 16m (Nassau)

It's a bit disorienting, having a regular work schedule to keep, but feeling like you've made a mistake and left the house at the wrong time of the day because the pitch black, the stars in the sky, the quiet forests, everything indicates that it's night time! If we could take a photo of our drives into town in the mornings these days, it would look like this (with a bit more snow at the side of the road):

We're thinking more and more about our upcoming visit home... only 14 days now! There are so many things to look forward to- a wedding and its related events, family parties, hikes with friends, a road trip to Ottawa, meals in restaurants, public transit! Life here in the woods of Mt Lorne is so relaxing that 18 days crammed full of fun times will be a perfect change of pace. Cookie and Smiley will be going to stay at Deb's, so we know they'll be well taken care of, and hopefully won't miss them too much.

Colin is at his last Hunter Ethics session today, and will post a blog soon about his experiences and plans for the future, when he is eligible to apply for a hunting license (you have to be a Yukon resident for one year). Knowing nothing about hunting, it's been neat to hear about the regulations here, and how things are different from other places in the country.

In other Colin-related news, he brought home a fresh Arctic Char fillet from work, and we made Char sushi! We're thinking of calling this one 'Robinson Roll'- Char, avocado, cucumber, fried yam and spicy mayo. Believe it or not, we ate all this for dinner last night!

As I finish off this blog post, the sun has started to make an appearance. That's my frozen breath in the foreground! And those two little while dots at the bottom right are Cookie's eyes- they glow green at night, while Smiley's glow red.

Here's an interesting story in the Yukon News about someone I got to meet briefly:

Happy weekend,
Love Lauren
